Growing Support for Independent politicians at Book Launch

Last Month over 30 people attended the book launch on Saturday 6th February of 'Independents for East Herts' in Hertford. The book was written by Jim Thornton, a former East Herts District Councillor and founder of the campaign group, East Herts People.

'Independents for East Herts' was primarily written to provide essential information on standing as a candidate in local council elections. It contains tips on electioneering and the benefits of standing as an independent.

Cover of Independents for East HertsIt has received endorsement by the Chairman of the Independent Group at the Local Government Association, Cllr Keith Ross OBE.

The book also contains Mr Thornton's own experience of local government and amusing tales of being a Conservative Councillor at East Herts District Councillor for eight years and running as an independent.

Many independent councillors attended the event including East Herts District Councillors Nigel and Deborah Clark and Keith Barnes. Hertford Town Councillor Angela Emsley and Buntingford Town Councillor, Debbie Le May also attended.

Several Councillors spoke at the event and discussed the need for independent politicians.

Cllr Deborah Clark says, 'I believe strongly that there should be no party politics in a District Council. It's great to see that so many people attended the event. There is certainly an interest in independent politics in East Herts'.

Cllr Keith Barnes says, 'I encourage anyone who's interested in local government and their community to stand as an independent. You can get elected as an independent and it's extremely important to fully represent the people and not a political party.'

Independent parliamentary candidate, Loucas Xenophontos, also spoke about his campaign to be Hertford and Stortford's next MP.

'Independents for East Herts' RRP at £6.99 and is available to buy from http://www.booksat.com/index.html and from Amazon.co.uk in the upcoming weeks.

East Herts People would like to say a big thank you to everyone who attended the event and would welcome comments and feedback on Mr Thornton's book.
