A second by-election for Hertford Town Council?

East Herts People is intrigued after reading today's copy of the Mercury to see a small article that in our view should be worthy of a much bigger space.

Apparently, Sacha Bright, a Conservative Town Councillor for Castle, is on the verge of being chucked out due to his lack of attendance at meetings.  Accordingly he has not been to a meeting since last November and unless he attends one by Monday he can wave goodbye to his place on the Council. The thing is, there is no meeting scheduled before then.

Therefore, it looks like we have two by elections to contend with in the coming months.  We are currently sorting out signatures for the Sele by election and will look forward to collecting signatures in Castle.

It is important to remember that unless these by elections are requested by the electorate the vacancy will be filled as and when the Town Council feel like it and by whomever they choose; democracy gone mad if you ask us.

Watch this space for more information in the coming weeks.

If anyone would like to sign the form requesting a by election or would like to find out more about what being a Town Councillor involves then please contact laura.anstey@ehpeople.org or call 01992 515597

What is your democratic process for deciding who to back in the case of more then one so called "independent?"

The main issue is that there is no advantage to be had from allowing more than one person to stand in each area as this simply splits the anti tory vote which otherwise could be used on just one candidate, giving them a fighting chance of standing.  If we had a list of people who were keen to stand in this by election then there are several options.  If we could not decide who should run then we would look to this website and our supporters to make the decision.  The Jury Team run a similar system, they promote Independents on a national level and once you nominate yourself it is up to their members to decide who actually stands.

I believe with the JuryTeam (another intiative from a former tory...funny that) that the general public had a text vote to decide their list for the European Elections.

Given your belief in voter apathy and disillusionment with the "mainstream" parties what is to stop those engaged with the tories, labour or whoever voting to pick who they view to be the weakest candidate?
