It's not only the weather that's heating up, things are hotting up here at East Herts People as we start our next election campaign for the Hertford Town Council by-election on Tuesday 21st July 2009. But we were thoroughly surprised that only one political party, the Conservatives, have put forward candidates.

Upon hearing of the anti-BNP protest taking place at County Hall this week my reaction was to roll my eyes as if to gesture 'not this again'. Not because I don't believe in standing up to the BNP's brand of divisive politics, but because experience shows that ham-fisted anti-BNP protests have a horrible tendency of giving the party a twisted sense of the moral high ground.

The live music venue, Hertford Marquee Club, on Railway Street closed on the 6th June 2009. Big names have played at the venue including Graham Coxon, Dirty Pretty Things and The Macabees.

In the last few days the political make-up of the UK has changed radically. The County Council elections have destroyed Labour and the Lib Dems came fourth in some regions. The BNP won seats in both the European Elections and the County Council elections; there are now 3 BNP County Councillors (1 in Hertfordshire) and 2 MEPs.
