Jim Thornton's Election Blog: why I am fighting this election

Submitted on Mon, 01/06/2009 - 10:43am

Saturday 30 May 2009:

People ask me why I am fighting my good friend and fellow-churchman Peter Ruffles: I am not fighting Peter, I am arguing for a better way of doing local politics. St Andrews has always had people from different parties, and in the eighties and nineties we had members standing for election for every party at each election. Now it is only Conservative, Labour and Independent - I am not sure why we have no Lib-Dems. I told Peter Ruffles before Christmas that I needed to wave the flag for Independents in order to find 26 candidates for the Town and Distict elections in 2011. While he was hardly enthusiastic at the competition, I told him that there was no chance I would beat him. That was before the House of Commons intervened to change the dynamics of this election. Whatever the result, we have achieved our aims beyond our wildest dreams, and the concept of Independents at local level has now become something that people will consider seriously.
