HCC execs on the Rich List

Anyone who's been within arms length of a newspaper this week will know about what Jacqui Smith's husband has been up to at the public's expense. Much to the anger of the recession-stricken UK taxpayer, we are becoming keenly aware of the sky-high expenses and lavish wages heaped upon our elected representatives.
But while the bill for Mr Smith's late-night viewing antics may now be common knowledge, The Taxpayers' Alliance have just published their Town Hall Rich List 2009, shedding some light on how lesser-known council executives are earning more than the Prime Minister each year.
In keeping with the pay scandal-fever currently gripping the national press, it transpires that Herts County Council's chief executive is earning £202,503 per anum, inclusive of expenses. The council spends almost £1.5 million a year on the salaries of 11 of its senior staff, making Hertfordshire one of the highest salaried in the country.
This begs the question: do we receive a service from our council to justify the wages? Recent Audit Commission reports on performance have hardly been gleaming, that's for sure.
